NO to a fallback into nationalism and intergovernmentalism
YES to a roadmap for a Security Union
Statement by Elmar Brok and Jo Leinen, Co-Chairs of the Spinelli Group in the European Parliament
“The European Council should not fall back into pure intergovernmentalism and side-line the European Commission and the European Parliament in solving Europe’s challenges and addressing the future set-up of the European Union”, demand the Co-Chairs of the Spinelli Group in the European Parliament Elmar Brok (EPP) and Jo Leinen (S&D).
“The letter of President Tusk to the Heads of State and Government goes in the wrong direction. It suggests that the Bratislava Summit should prepare a shift of power and competences from the European Institutions to the national capitals. Europe à la carte and intergouvernmentalism have shown a lack of efficiency and legitimacy in the past. Exactly the opposite is needed today.”, declare the Co-Chairs.
“The Bratislava Summit should decide on a roadmap for security and prosperity of the citizens in the EU. The immediate challenges reach from a common strategy against terrorism and the management of migration to Europe’s responsibility for peace and stability in its neighbourhood”.
“The Heads of State and Government should communicate the positive results of European policies and fight with more engagement against the populist and nationalist tendencies in their respective countries. At the same time a road-map to reform the functioning of the Union, within the current Treaties and beyond, needs to be discussed and agreed with the European Parliament. ”, say Brok and Leinen.
The Spinelli Group gathers pro-European and federalist members of the European Parliament. It is chaired by Elmar Brok (EPP) and Jo Leinen (S&D). The Board includes Mercedes Bresso (S&D), Pascal Durand (Greens/EFA), Sylvie Goulard (ALDE), Danuta Hübner (EPP), Ulrike Lunacek (Greens/EFA) and Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE). The Spinelli Group association is chaired by former MEP and European Parliament Vice-President Isabelle Durant.
